India Reverses Toxic Eggplant Approval, For Now
After approving the introduction of a toxic genetically modified eggplant, the Indian govt. has reversed its decision.
Monsanto was previously able to get the Indian government to approve its genetically modified eggplant (Bt Brinjal), despite the fact that Monsanto's own test data clearly showed the crop to be unfit for human or animal consumption and hazardous to the environment.
Bt crops contain genes from the bacteria Bacillus thuringenesis. Splicing in the genes causes the plant to produce the Bt toxin, which kills insects. The problem is that once the toxin enters the food chain it continues to have toxic effects. Human consumption of the Bt toxin causes numerous long-term health problems.
In the United States, where Bt corn is now the standard, allergy rates and immune disorders have skyrocketed.
As with other Bt crops, the toxic eggplant test data showed serious health hazards:
- Produces antibiotic resistance in people or animals who consume it. Feeding it to people would greatly increase the death rate from infections treatable by anti-biotics.
- Has 15% less calories and a different chemistry than non-GM eggplant.
- Contains a very high 16-17 mg/kg Bt insecticide toxin. The toxin produces an allergic reaction in humans and animals and stresses the immune system. It also alters blood chemistry and causes organ damage.
There is simply no logical way that the Bt Brinjal could not be toxic and it should never have been approved. The corrupt officials who approved it should be charged with attempted murder and crimes against the environment.
